Registration for Heatbreaker Half Marathon Opens Feb. 1

Registration for the largest indoor half marathon in the United States will open on Feb. 1. The inaugural Heatbreaker Half Marathon will take place on July 28 at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The event will take place on the 443-meter running track around the Olympic Ice Oval at the Pettit Center. The Pettit Center is one of three indoor ovals in North America and one of just 11 in all the world; making for one unique venue for this unique event. Runners will have to lap the oval just over 47 times to cover the official 13.1-mile half marathon distance.

The Pettit Center, which first opened December 31, 1992, is home to many ice sports and a training site for US Speedskating and its athletes. The Pettit Center also hosts thousands of users annually on its indoor track, which is believed to be the largest in Wisconsin.

The Heatbreaker will have four "heats" with 125 runners in each heat. There will be $1,000 in prize money to the top three overall male and female finishers. There will also be a Half Marathon Relay at 7 p.m.

PT Timing of Milwaukee, Wis. will handle the timing for the Heatbreaker. PT Timing will use a radio frequency chip timing system that is similar to what they use for high school and collegiate indoor track meets. Runners will attach the chip around their ankle, and laps will be automatically recorded by PT’s computer system.

The Heatbreaker is presented by Longrun Athletics, which also produces the Icebreaker Indoor Marathon & Half Marathon each January at the Pettit Center. He event sells out every year and has received front-page coverage in the Wall Street Journal.
