It's not too early to start making plans to run in the inaugural 26.2 wtih Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer. The event will be held on February 17, 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida, and promises to be one of the memorable first-time marathons in the country.
The beneficiary of the race will be the Donna Hicken Foundation and Mayo Clinic. The foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to helping women with breast cancer. A portion of the proceeds will be used by the foundation for the care of breast cancer survivors in need, while the majority of the proceeds will be given to the Mayo Clinic for research and its Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic.
"This marathon is dedicated solely to ending breast cancer in our lifetime and to caring for those who are living with the disease right now," said Hicken, who is a two-time breast cancer survivor and an evening news anchor for Gannett Broadcasting's ABC and NBC news affiliates in Jacksonville.
The event director is Jeff Galloway, the former US Olympian, Runner's World magazine columnist and best-selling author. Galloway will be directing training programs around the country to prepare runners for the event. The programs will be in about 50 cities and will be used to help promote the race. For more information, go to Jeff Galloway's website.
"After almost 50 years of running, organizing events and training runners for marathons, I've not seen a cause as powerful as that of fighting and ending breast cancer," Galloway said. "I believe that this event will attract more than 5,000 in the first year, and could easily grow to become one of the largest in the world in 10 years."
There will be energizing and motivating activities during the course of the race weekend, including music and life-enhancing information on fitness, nutrition and health.
The race course includes beautiful views of the intracoastal waterway and tidal marshland, and will pass through the unique beach communities of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. Weather-permitting, a 2.5 mile portion of the course will be run on the hard-packed sand of the Florida coastline.
Runners can expect idea weather conditions as well. The average high for Jacksonville in mid-Febuary is 68 degrees; the average low is 45.
