Catalina Marathon Make This Your New Year's Resolution

Most athletes refer to the event as “a marathon like no other” or “the unattainable”. However you will not hear the veterans mimic such phrases about the annual Catalina Marathon.

On March 17, 2007, Pacific Sports LLC will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Catalina Marathon. This marathon is one of the most rewarding courses in the world and one of the island’s signature events. In addition to the marathon race distance there is a 5K, 10K, and Kids Run all with point-to-point ocean views through the beautiful island of Catalina.

Just what is it about this race that makes it unique? What first comes to mind is the challenging hills and terrain, the spectacular views of the island and Pacific Ocean, and the camaraderie felt among the veteran athletes. The off-road trails from Two Harbors to the finish in Avalon present a challenging elevation gain of over 3,700 feet throughout the course. This Catalina Marathon poses the ultimate challenge to the avid marathon athlete.

Bill McDermott has run in all 29 Catalina Marathons, finishing an unprecedented first in 13 overall. Bill exclaims, “The hills are where the fun are!” during his perspectives on training, history, and general musings on the events over the years. Yes, the hills are daunting and intimidating but once at the top, the view of the California coastline, the ocean, the buffalo and then the downhill descent are spectacular.

The Catalina Marathon tells so many stories of tradition and legacy. In 1924, 14 buffalo were released on the island as “extras” for the western film, “The Vanishing America”. The buffalo remained and multiplied for the sole purpose of encouragement for every runner’s fight through the interior island, seldom seen by the average tourist. Many claim “this will be my definitely be my final year” but something, maybe the buffalo, always draw them back for more. Bill McDermott is familiar with the statement but finally accepted his reason for return was the bond with fellow runners. “It is a familiarity and recognition of the faces of so many people who have run over those hills so many times in the past, so that the race becomes a family reunion every year as well as a chance to renew friendly rivalries”, said McDermott.

While the marathon is the focal point, most people visit Catalina Island for the weekend package. The race can be part of a perfect island getaway. This is an exceptional way to intertwine fitness plus quality time while vacationing with family and friends. Runners and fans can stay at one of the Avalon’s fine hotels or take their camping gear along for Two Harbors. But let’s be honest, in the end everyone likes to enjoy the real taste of Catalina Island. The Catalina Islanders always notice how the runners take over the entire town of Avalon every year cramming themselves into various popular locations like, “Luau’s Larry’s Bar” for the Buffalo Milk and music. More importantly, they gather around to share each other’s company and brag about their wonderful achievements.

Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, the Catalina Marathon has countless offerings. We promise you will enjoy the beautiful scenery and celebrate the success of finishing the “The Toughest Marathon” recognized by Competitor Magazine in 2005. Each participant always takes home amazing tales of their quests and yearns to return each year for more. If you want to make a remarkable New Year’s Resolution then plan to join us at the 2007 Catalina Marathon for the most amazing experience of a lifetime!

Jack Caress, the current race director is interested in preserving the traditions and unique tales of the Catalina Marathon. This race is about the participant’s stories they will tell forever. Registration is limited to 720 participants so make sure to start their New Year’s Resolution with the Catalina Marathon. Please visit our website for more information.
