A “new” look and a “new” name have put Las Vegas back on the map as a premier marathon destination. The New Las Vegas Marathon will make history when it becomes the first race to run the world-famous Las Vegas Strip and through the Fremont Street Experience. The race will be held on December 4th.
The race will begin at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and will start at 6 a.m., a time at which the average temperature in December is a comfortable 50 degrees. The course is a loop entirely within the Las Vegas city limits. There is a cap of 15,000 runners and organizers expect the event to sell out. Registration is $95 until November 1 and $105 after.
In addition to the marathon, there will be a two-day New Las Vegas Marathon Expo at the Mandalay Bay and a post marathon concert featuring a yet-to-be-announced major act. There will also be a pasta dinner held the night before the race.
In yet another unique move to generate publicity, organizers are looking for couples who are willing to run the entire race and get married at an on-course chapel (called “Run Through Chapel”) near mile 5. The brief ceremony will be carried live on television. The minister will also be running in the marathon.
