The Sunburst Marathon College Football Fans…
This Marathon’s For You

What could be better than visiting two of college football’s most popular tourist attractions? How about running a marathon from one attraction to the other. The Sunburst Marathon starts at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana and finishes at the University of Notre Dame’s football stadium. For college football fans, this marathon course is as good as it gets. Held on the first Saturday of June, the Sunburst also features an early start time (5:45 a.m.) and mild temperatures. The average high temperature on race day is 78 degrees while the average low is 57. For the 2004 race, the temperature was 54 at 7 a.m., 66 at 10 a.m. and 75 by noon. Runners start at the Hall of Fame, wind through the streets of South Bend, and head along the banks of the St. Joseph River toward neighboring Mishawaka, where the course turns around. Runners then head back into South Bend and up to the beautiful Notre Dame campus. Up until last year, the finish to the race was on the 50-yard line of the Notre Dame football field. But due to construction last year, the finish was changed to outside of the north end of the stadium. No word on whether or not the 50-yard line finish will return in 2005, according to Race Director Liz Peralta. The course is a USATF certified Boston-qualifier and features 23 water stations, Carbboom at 4 stations, bananas at 2 stations and Gatorade at several stops. At the finish, runners can enjoy great food and a massage. The race festivities begin on Friday with an expo at the College Football Hall of Fame, where runners can also pick up their race packets and t-shirts. In addition to the marathon, a half-marathon, 5K and 10K races are also held, and all start and finish in the same place as the marathon. A 5K fun walk is also scheduled.
