Online Gallery Explores the Art of Running
 | What do you get when you combine a love of running and a talent for painting? The answer can be found on the website of Running Art (www.runningart.com).
Runner and artist Coreen Steinbach uses her artistic talents to produce beautiful works of fine art with running themes. Many of her pieces are displayed in her online gallery, making the Running Art website one of the most unique destinations for marathon runners on the web.
“I think there is quite a niche market for what I do as there is little fine art available for runners or those involved in similar sports,” said Steinbach, who has completed five marathons and is a world-class runner in the mile and ranked nationally in several other distances. “There’s tons of photographic stuff, but not much of the fine art genre.”
In addition to the running scene works, Running Art also offers custom portraits for individuals who would like to capture a special moment at a race, such as finishing a marathon or another race-day event.
“I offer custom portraits for people who want a special gift for someone who has completed a marathon or after a special race, or for parents who want to capture their son or daughter in a portrait – either a high school or college cross country or track runner,” Steinbach said.
And for the race directors out there, Steinbach also does event art and has produced works of art for major events like the Buffalo Marathon, the Utica Boilermaker and the Freihofer’s Run for Women. Selling event art gives race directors another way of raising funds for their events.
Steinbach loves to compete, and her passion for running has evolved into art. As a child, she loved to draw, and in 1990, she created her first piece of running art, a group of runners, which she displayed at her house. The reproduction of this piece ended up selling at various road races, and this encouraged her to do more running art.
Realizing that the internet would make an effective way to market her work, Steinbach launched the Running Art website in 2000. The site, which was updated last year, promotes her running art, event art and custom portraits.
“As a runner myself, I am continually inspired by the sport,” she said. “The physical beauty of color and movement, the emotional beauty of effort and achievement, I strive to convey these emotions in my paintings to all who love our sport.”
Steinbach has recently illustrated a children’s book, My Dad is an Ironman, which available at bookstores nationwide. She works for her studio near Syracuse, New York. Her paintings have won numerous running awards and are represented in collections internationally.
